Why Does God Love Us?
Have you wondered about this?
Scripture repeatedly points to God’s love for us. John 3:16 begins with the powerful words, “For God so loved the world...” But when I look at human history, I find myself asking why. Why does the Almighty God love us when we seem so unlovable?
Just look at our record.
In Genesis 1:27, God created Adam and Eve in His image. They reflected Him. Yet their disobedience introduced sin into the world. God could have destroyed them, but instead He prepared them for life outside the garden. He still loved them.
As humanity multiplied, so did wickedness. Genesis 6:5 says evil became so great that God regretted making mankind. Yet instead of wiping out everything, He started over again with Noah and his family.
Then God chose a people through whom His plan of redemption would come. Again and again they failed, rebelled, and turned away. Still, God loved them, pursued them, and forgave them.
Before, during, and after Jesus’ ministry, humanity continued to show the same condition described in 1 John 2:16: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Yet 2 Peter 3:9 reminds us that God is patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but all to come to repentance.
So why does He love us??? Why should He? Why would He?
Because love is His character. God is love. (1 John 4:7–8)
We were created in His image, and though sin stained that image, Jesus cleanses it. God still sees what He created us to be.
It may defy my logic, but the truth is undeniable: God loves us.
Reflection: Knowing how much God loves us and specifically how much He loves you, what will you do next?
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for Your love.
