Christ followers believe the good news of Jesus. We surrender our lives to Him and commit to making Him our source and our guide. Yet sometimes, in the middle of life’s noise, we struggle with how to do that well.
The noise is everywhere—racism and hate, inequality, greed, bickering in leadership, trafficking, life-threatening weather, abuse, terrorism, persecution, division in the faith, sickness, disease, wars, and rumors of war. It is enough to make us want to scream.
The list feels exhausting and endless. And much of it comes on top of our own personal struggles.
In moments like these, we can become frazzled. Fear, worry, anxiety, anger, sadness, and a host of other emotions rise up, all trying to pull our eyes away from Jesus.
But when those feelings grow loud, the right response is to keep our eyes on Him.
Paul reminded the Colossian believers of this truth:
"If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory." (Colossians 3:1-4 NKJV)
When we keep our eyes on Jesus, we experience the peace he promised us in John 14:27: Jesus says, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
Reflection: Read Matthew 14:25-31. What happened when Peter took his eyes off Jesus?
Prayer: I want to keep my eyes on you, Dear One. But the waves are big and the thunder is loud. Please help me. I need you.
