The More You Know God, the Easier It Is to Surrender

Surrendering to God may be hard if we don't understand his character. His character defines who he is.

Think about some of the ways the Bible describes God's character.

In Revelations, he is the Bright Morning Star. In Genesis, he is known as Creator. John tells us he is loving. Deuteronomy calls him faithful. One of the Psalms calls him the Rock of my strength. Second Peter states that he is patient and persevering. And he is the God of Peace in Judges.

Throughout the Bible we see his character demonstrated. Surrender becomes increasingly easier as we personally experience these character traits.

One of my first personal experiences with God’s character happened while I was working as a trainer. One day, I needed to arrive early to class, but my car would not start. It was an intermittent problem that had shown up again. I ran into the house to make a call, then decided to try the car one more time. This time, as if it had not just been acting like an insolent toddler refusing to budge, the engine started smoothly. Since my belongings were already in the car and I was worried about being late, I drove off.

More than eight hours later I returned home and pulled into my driveway. That's when I noticed the front door was wide open and the keys were still hanging from the lock. I had left my home open and accessible to anyone.

But nothing had been touched.

A neighbor mentioned seeing the door open and occasionally looking through the screen, but she was not the one guarding my house. God was. That day, I came to know Him as Protector. I believe God placed angels outside the door and said, "You can't come in here today."

Surrender is an ever growing practice for me. It deepens more as I experience his character.

Take time to learn the names of God. They will reveal his character to you. Knowing his character may help as you surrender more fully to him.

Reflection: What have you learned from the Bible about God's character? What have learned from experience?

Prayer: Provider, Friend, Helper, Protector and King. I give you praise because you are so worthy. Please help me to learn more about your character. And please open my eyes to see the experiences I've had with your character. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
