Beyond the Pursuit: From Happiness to Joy
[The Scene]
A father sits on a dirty linoleum floor, holding his young son. He is penniless, jobless, and homeless. The bathroom is their shelter for the night. When someone tries to enter, he braces the door with his foot, and he cries.
You may recall this moment from the film, The Pursuit of Happyness. The father wanted more for his child. He was looking for happiness. In the movie, he finds it after a whirlwind journey towards housing and employment.
For many, that is the goal. We link happiness to position, power and/or possessions.
But God is not in the happiness business. Happiness is temporary. It fails when that which makes us happy is gone. .
The Practice of Joy
While the world encourages the “pursuit of happiness”, God invites us into the practice of joy. Joy is rooted in God’s presence and is not controlled by circumstances.
Jesus told his disciples that He wanted them to have His joy. His joy would be complete. (John 15: 11) They would need this for what was ahead of them. In addition, joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit and is evidence of the Holy Spirit working in the believer's life. (Galatians 5:22)
How Joy Grows
But joy doesn’t just appear. It grows through connection with God.
Jesus told his disciples to abide in him. When we spend time in God’s Word, communicate with Him through prayer, and practice His Presence with worship and praise, we abide in God. This builds intimacy which promotes connection.
The prophet Habakkuk does a wonderful job of explaining joy:
"Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! The Sovereign Lord is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights." (Habbakuk 3:17-19 NLT)
This is a joy mindset. It is rooted in connection with God.
Reflection: Are you simply happy or have you moved beyond happiness to the practice of joy?
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me. I listen to so much and at times I can't find joy. But I know joy does not show in my emotions. It is in my attitude. As I build my relationship with The Father, give me the attitude of joy. Let me experience joy even when what I hear and see wants me to do otherwise.
